About WEC

Women’s Economic Council, formerly the Canadian Women’s Community Economic Development Council, was founded in 2002 to advance women-centred community economic development to improve the lives of women, their families and communities.

We are a nationally incorporated, not-for-profit organization of women –centred community economic development organizations and practitioners.

National SUMMIT 2010 on a People-Centred Economy: The Women's Economic Council is one of 12 organizations on the Steering Committee.

Building a people-centred economy has long been at the heart of cooperative, credit union, social economy and community economic development (CED) movements, along with a broad swath of the non-profit world. All these sectors grew out of the historical struggle against want, impoverishment and deep inequalities.

The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today announced support for the Women's Economic Council, for its project to address women's economic security and leadership.
